M.A. Jalil Memorial School for Girls

We have started a new initiative to support girls by the creation of the M.A. Jalil Memorial School for Girls is a pre-school for underprivileged and at risk children in Mirpur, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Bangladesh is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh most populous country in the world with a high poverty rate. The literacy rate of the female population of Bangladesh is as low as 41.4%. Unfortunately the literacy rate of the girls in low income families in Mirpur, a low to middle income part of Dhaka with high number of garment factories and rural influx, is even lower. The girls at the school come from families where the average monthly income is below 4,500 Taka (64 USD) per month. The government schools in the area have limited funding and low number of teachers, adding to the lack of motivation among students to attend school.

Organization Description
The M.A. Jalil Memorial School for Girls is an alternative year around day school for children between the ages of five and ten. Full-time and volunteer teachers teach students the native Bangla and English alphabet and numbers. In addition, visiting child protection academics and activists from the local and international community are invited by the school to inform the students and parents about measures they can take to ensure the students' best education, health and safety. Therefore, students enrolled in this program will not only be able to read and write Bangla and English, but will also learn critical safety skills designed to prevent child abuse, substance abuse and trafficking.

History
The M. A. Jalil Memorial Foundation is named after Mr. M. A. Jalil who was an accountant and attorney by training and a philanthropist and humanitarian in practice. Mr. Jalil was born in a rural village in North Bengal to an educated family. He went on to pursue higher education through various scholarships in Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh, as well as in England and Italy. For almost 30 years he served his country as an executive and later management for Bangladesh Textile Mills Corp.

During his lifetime, Mr. Jalil funded the education of countless impoverished youth. He also donated property he inherited and invested in North Bengal and Dhaka to several schools and mosques.

Mr. Jalil passed away after a brave fight with bone and prostrate cancer on July 9, 2008. He took pride in appreciating the struggle of workers to provide for the education and welfare of their children. He always took pride in being able to help those less fortunate even when he himself had limited means. During his lifetime he has inspired many with his generosity. The M.A. Jalil Memorial Foundation School for Girls is a school run by his youngest daughter and her family in an effort to continue his legacy.
